Over the course of a decade at Grubhub, I evolved from a Senior Engineer into a Senior Director of Engineering, leading a high-impact organization of 80+ engineers and data scientists responsible for powering the core of the company’s Commerce Platform.
Key accomplishments and areas of ownership included:
Leadership & Growth
•Progressed from IC to Senior Director through a series of promotions on the managerial track
•Scaled and led a cross-functional team of engineers and data scientists (80+ FTEs)
•Focused on talent development, operational excellence, and strategic planning
Commerce Platform Ownership. Directed the design and development of systems underpinning:
•Search & discovery (restaurants, menus, groceries, other vendors, and inventories)
•Relevance and personalization (ML, LLMs, ranking)
•User account management, privacy, security, and fraud prevention
•Geolocation and geofencing services
•Restaurant & inventory availability and pricing
•Experimentation platform and segmentation
•Ratings and reviews services
•Backend-for-frontend architecture
Engineering Operational Excellence (EOE). Instituted robust EOE programs to optimize:
•Resiliency (e.g., near-perfect order acceptance rates)
•Security and data protection
•Efficiency, with a focus on cost control and reduced complexity
•Engineering velocity, with a strong culture of continuous improvement
Business Growth & Diversification
•Delivered and scaled Grubhub’s advertising business from the ground up
•Led technical efforts in traffic generation, including SEO, SEM, affiliates, and marketing tech
•Delivered key integrations, including becoming part of the Amazon Marketplace
•Enabled new verticals such as convenience, grocery, and alcohol through platform extensibility
